The Importance of Physiology
Rather than relying on the standard visual angiographic assessment, doctors can measure the fractional flow reserve (FFR) which is an index based upon the blood pressure changes along diseased arteries. FFR provides an objective measure of the significance of coronary disease. It helps doctors decide the best type of treatment for an individual patient. Using FFR to guide treatment results in better patient outcomes (less heart attacks and deaths) and reduced cost. Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, FFR is underused.
